Small Cell Outdoor Cabinet Thermal Solution

Small cells, in many ways, are smaller versions of traditional wireless cell sites (macrocells). Small cells differ from macrocells in that they have lower RF power, shorter range, higher site density, and lower antenna heights. For many small cell deployments, active electronics such as BBU’s and rectifiers need to be co-located in an outdoor environment with the small cell pole. These active components need environmental protection and cooling. SRC has designed a small cell cabinet cooling solution and has demonstrated thermal performance using CFD modeling and thermal analysis.

Smart Pole Thermal Design

A Smart Pole is a light pole that combines intelligent lighting with a variety of other features. These features can include 4G/5G service, WiFi, video surveillance, IoT, and mobile edge computing (MEC). This growing list of features, along with demand for street side aesthetics, results in the need to conceal active electronics inside the pole. These active electronics require a cooling system internal to the pole. SRC has conceived a smart pole cooling solution and verified performance through CFD thermal analysis.

TVWS Antenna Module Solution

TV White Space (TVWS) includes recently allocated wireless spectrum that, due to its low frequency band, can offer long range broadband connections to rural subscribers. SRC Design partnered with Telco Design Connect to develop a TVWS antenna/radio module that has excellent RF performance, is compact and visually appealing for rural business and residential applications, and has very low cost.

I have known Mark Hendrix for a number of years and we have interacted in several professional initiatives and have also developed a great friendship. He is truly one of the best electronic cooling technologists that I have ever known. Also, he gives much of himself to mentoring graduate students while supporting research activities at universities. For the last decade, UT-Arlington and CommScope have been doing joint research projects and numerous graduate students have been involved in these projects. Mark Hendrix played a key role in the success of these projects including several joint publications as well as helping the students get placed in great companies. Through the years, he has also presented several seminars in my class at UTA including a seminar at MIT when I was a Visiting Professor in the 2007 academic year.
