BACKGROUND

A Smart Pole is typically a light pole that combines intelligent lighting with communication, power, and security features such 4G/5G cell service, WiFi, surveillance video, mobile edge computing, and more.

Smart Poles are commonly deployed in urban areas where demand for these services is growing rapidly. These deployment areas are frequently referred to as ‘smart cities’.

CHALLENGE

The sophistication of Smart Poles is increasing rapidly. The ever-growing list of features, along with demand for street side aesthetics results in the need to conceal active electronics inside the pole.

Examples of active electronics that could be housed in a typical Smart Pole are Baseband Units (BBUs), power equipment, and edge compute gear.

These active electronic products require a sealed environment, cooling system, and local air temperature control.

SOLUTION

A Smart Pole design with an environmentally sealed thermal solution was created. The thermal solution was analyzed and cooling effectiveness evaluated using 6SigmaET CFD software.

RESULTS

Key conclusions from this work were:

  • Electronic data transfer from CAD (Solidworks) to an analysis tool (6SigmaET) speeds overall solution time, even for detailed CAD models

  • Equipment such as a BBU’s can have intake temperature limits (55 C for example) that drive thermal design

  • Combining air flow containment to create a ‘cold aisle’, and a heat exchanger or thermosiphon to limit temperature rise can provide compliant Smart Pole thermals when active electronics are present.
